In 2000 the EU has launched the successor of the Lisbon pact: the Europe 2020 strategy, which aims at “smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth”. One of the main targets is to boost investments in research and development (R&D) and innovation.

The Community Innovation Survey (CIS) measures innovation activities in enterprises. Since 2005 surveys among Flemish enterprises are carried out on a biannual basis. The most important results of the CIS are bundled and discussed in the CIS report (note: available in Dutch only).

The CIS report 2021 was updated with an international comparison as soon as the international numbers were made available by Eurostat.
